Yesterday I was on LinkedIn when I noticed mention of SMARTIE goals. As a facilitator and trainer, I was well-versed in the world of SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals combined with supporting objectives to contribute to an organization’s effectiveness by driving tangible results. But what did these last two letters represent, and how could they make a larger impact on an organization’s overall success?

S.M.A.R.T.I.E. Goals
SMARTIE goals add elements of inclusion and equity to our goals that integrate these principles into the very fabric of how we do business. They challenge us to reflect on how the people affected by the very processes and activities we are attempting to change will be included in the change and in roles of power or influence. Furthermore, they ask us to reflect on how our goals are promoting equity and access – not necessarily equality.
